Poetry has a much longer 'shelf life'. Prose, and especially contemporary 'pop' prose, has a much shorter life span, is more tendentious and therefore more volatile.




Poetry is like a painting; even after centuries, people still can admire it.




The poet is someone who describes his fall
from his tumble to the earth.





A tear is the magnifying glass of the soul;
what you see through it is poetry.

ROBERT GRAVES


Since the age of fifteen poetry has been my ruling passion and I have never intentionally undertaken any task or formed any relationship that seemed inconsistent with poetic principles; which has sometimes won me the reputation of an eccentric.

BILLY COLLINS


I’m a great believer in poetry out of the classroom, in public places, on subways, trains, on cocktail napkins. I’d rather have my poems on the subway than around the seminar table at an MFA program.

The word poet literally means maker: anything which is not well made doesn’t exist.



Critical lice are like body lice, which desert corpses to seek the living.



You do not become a critic until it has been completely established to your own satisfaction that you cannot be a poet.



I was born to travel and write verse.
